Alumni and Alumni Group Standards Policy

1.0 Policy Purpose

The purpose of this policy is to establish Brown University’s (“Brown” or “the University”) and the Brown Alumni Association’s (“BAA”) standards for Alumni and Alumni Group behavior, to the extent not already covered by existing applicable policies and procedures, and consequences for violations of this policy.

2.0 To Whom the Policy Applies

This policy applies to all Alumni and Alumni Groups, as defined in Section 4.0.

3.0 Policy Statement

Alumni and Alumni Groups are expected to be cognizant of and comply with all University policies, rules, and procedures that are applicable to their engagement with Brown, including but not limited to their work and volunteer roles as Alumni and Alumni Groups. The University may address Alumni and Alumni Group behavior that violates University policies, rules, and procedures or that the University otherwise deems to be inappropriate in its sole discretion. 

3.1 Violations of the Policy

The University will continue to make determinations and take action based on whether an Alum or Alumni Group has engaged in conduct in violation of existing University policies, rules, and procedures, including but not limited to the Title IX PolicyTitle IX Grievance ProcedureSexual Misconduct PolicySexual Misconduct Grievance ProcedureNondiscrimination and Anti-Harassment Policy, and Discrimination and Harassment Standard Operating Procedure for Addressing and Responding to Reports and Complaints. In the absence of an applicable policy or procedure, the Vice President for Alumni Relations or designee will make this determination in the Vice President’s sole discretion. Violation of the policy may result in action taken by the University to address the violation. Such action includes, but is not limited to, a reprimand, probation, rescission of Alumni privileges, and derecognition of an Alumni Group. 

3.2 Opportunities to Improve

The University acknowledges that there are situations in which an Alum’s or Alumni Group’s behavior is driven by temporary circumstances. As such, Alumni and Alumni Groups subject to action taken by the Vice President for Alumni Relations as a result of violating this policy may request reconsideration of that action by writing to the Vice President for Alumni Relations. The Vice President for Alumni Relations or their designee will review all requests and respond in writing with their determination, which will be final.

4.0 Definitions

For the purpose of this policy, the terms below have the following definitions:

Alumni, Alumnae, Alumnus, Alumna, or Alum (collectively referred to in this policy as “Alumni” or “Alums”):

All persons designated as alumni by the University, and as defined by the Brown Alumni Association.

Alumni Group:

All groups and organizations recognized by the Office of Alumni Relations or BAA.

5.0 Responsibilities

All individuals to whom this policy applies are responsible for becoming familiar with and following this policy. University supervisors and employees with student oversight duties are responsible for promoting the understanding of this policy and for taking appropriate steps to help ensure and enforce compliance with it.

6.0 Consequences for Violating this Policy

Failure to comply with this and related policies is subject to disciplinary action, up to and including termination of an Alum’s or Alumni Group’s association with the University, in accordance with applicable alumni disciplinary procedures in the suspension or revocation of the user’s relationship with Brown University.
