1.0 Policy Purpose
The purpose of this policy is to ensure students have adequate health insurance.
2.0 To Whom the Policy Applies
This policy applies to all active, full- and part-time undergraduate, graduate, and medical students.
3.0 Policy Statement
All registered students will be automatically enrolled in and billed for the Brown University Student Health Insurance Plan. Participation in this Student Health Insurance Plan is required unless a waiver is completed and submitted each academic year by the waiver deadline.
3.1 Waiver
Students electing to waive the Student Health Insurance Plan must complete an insurance waiver annually prior to the waiver deadline. The waiver deadline for annual coverage is September 1. For students who are newly enrolled for the second semester, the deadline is February 1.
All Brown University students must be covered by an Affordable Care Act (ACA) Compliant Health Insurance Plan that is underwritten and administered in the United States and is comparable to the Student Health Insurance Plan in order to waive the Student Health Insurance Plan offered by Brown University.
4.0 Definitions
For the purpose of this policy, the term below has the following definition:
Student Health Insurance Plan: Designed to protect against unexpected medical expenses and to meet most students’ needs throughout the policy year.
5.0 Responsibilities
All individuals to whom this policy applies are responsible for becoming familiar with and following this policy. University supervisors and employees with student oversight duties are responsible for promoting the understanding of this policy and for taking appropriate steps to help ensure and enforce compliance with it.
6.0 Consequences for Violating this Policy
Failure to comply with this and related policies is subject to disciplinary action, up to and including suspension without pay, or termination of employment or association with the University, in accordance with applicable (e.g., staff, faculty, student) disciplinary procedures.
