Continuous Quality Improvement Policy

1.0 Policy Purpose

The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University (the “Medical School”) is committed to continuous quality improvement (“CQI”) of the medical education program and institutional systems and processes to enhance quality, ensure ongoing compliance with accreditation standards, and align with institutional priorities.

2.0 To Whom the Policy Applies

This policy applies to Medical School faculty, staff, and students.

3.0 Policy Statement

The Medical School shall engage in continuous quality improvement (CQI) processes that:

  1. Define and periodically review both short- and long-term educational program goals;
  2. Utilize measurable outcomes to assess improvements and goal progression and inform medical education program quality; and
  3. Implement systematic monitoring to ensure the high quality of the medical education program and compliance with Liaison Committee on Medical Education (“LCME”) accreditation requirements.

The Continuous Quality Improvement Committee of The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University (“CQI Committee”) has primary responsibility for overseeing CQI efforts. In conjunction with co-chairs, subject matter experts, and key stakeholders, the Committee regularly reviews LCME standards and elements to identify gaps, guide program modifications, and ensure improvements support accreditation compliance and institutional goals. The CQI Committee employs a structured, data-driven process to inform CQI and strategic planning activities and evaluate the effectiveness of any modifications, new goals or initiatives, etc.

The CQI Committee reports to the Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education, who represents the CQI Committee to the Leadership Council and the Dean of Medicine and Biological Sciences, providing recommendations and outcomes related to CQI and accreditation activities. The CQI Committee may coordinate efforts with subcommittees and other stakeholders to ensure transparency and continuous oversight of the medical education program. Based on the CQI Committee’s recommendations, the Leadership Council provides oversight regarding CQI and accreditation initiatives and decisions.

4.0 Definitions

For the purpose of this policy, the terms below have the following definitions:

Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI):

An ongoing, data-driven process for identifying strengths and weaknesses and implementing improvements to organizations, systems, or programs, such as the medical education program.

Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME):

An accrediting body for U.S. medical education programs leading to the MD degree.

5.0 Responsibilities

All individuals to whom this policy applies are responsible for becoming familiar with and following this policy. University supervisors and employees with student oversight duties are responsible for promoting the understanding of this policy and for taking appropriate steps to help ensure and enforce compliance with it.

CQI Committee: Will drive CQI processes and accreditation efforts.

Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education: Will chair the CQI Committee to oversee the CQI process and accreditation activities.

6.0 Consequences for Violating this Policy

Failure to comply with this and related policies is subject to disciplinary action, up to and including suspension without pay, or termination of employment or association with the University, in accordance with applicable (e.g., staff, faculty, student) disciplinary procedures.
